On June 28, 2013 as part of the American Library Association (ALA) meetings two prominent book publishing industry associations offered a joint afternoon program: NISO/BISG 7th Annual Forum: The Changing Standards Landscape EBooks: Discovery & Metadata Exchange, File Formats and Functionality, and Meeting Patron Needs.

My friend Anakana Schofield’s debut novel Malarky is about to be published (by the excellent independent publisher Biblioasis) and I saw on Facebook that she was going to launch the book with a reading at the Vancouver Public Library so I wanted to make sure I’m there on March 21st.

The Book Industry Study Group (BISG) today published its new policy for best practices in assigning ISBNs to digital products, aka ebooks. With endorsement from BookNet Canada, the National Information Standards Organization (NISO), and IBPA, the Independent Book Publishers Association, it’s therefore applicable across North America (“but could be applied elsewhere as well”).
