Literary Review’s 2009 Bad Sex in Fiction Prize Winner Announced

Monday, November 30, 2009

I’m not certain if I can justify this posting as in any way representing the future of publishing, but I know that I can’t resist reporting on it.

As noted on the publication’s web site, “The Literary Review Bad Sex in Fiction Award was inaugurated by [Evelyn Waugh's son] Auberon Waugh in 1993 to ‘draw attention [...]

Why the Kindle is Safer than Print

Friday, November 27, 2009

For the last two days I’ve been reading a good old-fashioned paperback novel. Written by Steve Hely, published by Grove/Atlantic, Inc., it’s called “How I Became a Famous Novelist.” I don’t remember how I first heard about it, but I ordered in from the West Vancouver Public Library and picked it up yesterday. As was promised [...]

50 Things to Do with a Book, Now That Reading is Dead

Sunday, November 22, 2009

I was just alerted via a link on Books & Publishing to an excerpt in Vanity Fair of the wonderful illustrator Bruce McCall’s new book called, straight-from-the-headlines, “50 Things to Do with a Book (Now That Reading is Dead).”
Dedicated to Johannes Gutenberg, the “Browse Inside” feature on the HarperCollins web site offers the introduction and [...]

When the Boss Sets Your Desk on Fire, You’re Fired

Thursday, November 19, 2009

The Schumpeter column in the current issue of The Economist examines the question of whether CEOs serve their firms better when they are high-profile egoists like Steve Jobs and Bill Gates, or low-profile “anonymous managers,” such as Sam Palmisano at IBM. It mentions Haruku Nishimatsu, the boss of Japan Airlines, “who travels to work on [...]

Twitter is Dead

Thursday, October 8, 2009

It’s been quite a few years since I was a regular reader of Robert X. Cringely in print. I recall when he had a regular column in InfoWorld that it was always good fun. In 1996 he published a book which I purchased, “Accidental Empires: How the Boys of Silicon Valley Make Their Millions, Battle [...]

Beware What You Share, You Will Get #twaxed

Thursday, October 8, 2009

Twaxed.com: A fun site discovered today that clearly points to the downside of Tweeting.
According to the FAQ:

Why is my Tweet on Twaxed.com?
Your Tweet got #twaxed because it is absurdly ridiculous, completely inappropriate, or highly entertaining.
What is this site?
With your help, we post and then rank the most ridiculous, inappropriate, and entertaining Tweets submitted to Twitter. [...]

Order Takeout Online — Just For the Fun of It!

Wednesday, September 30, 2009
Category: Bright Moments

I’m not sure it’s going to overtake surfing for porn, but bravo for the effort!
White Spot is a treasured family restaurant here in British Columbia. Used to be downscale, now semi-upscale. Which is to say, having tried it recently, I can’t imagine why you’d eat there, let alone go to the web for takeout.
But bravo [...]

It’s Time to Play CHEESE or font

Sunday, September 13, 2009

What fun: a chance to play a game where you test your knowledge of the names of cheeses and the names of fonts.

A tip for new players: you don’t need to go back to the home page to start a new game. As you can see in the illustration above, the next name appears after [...]

Meet Mr. Twitters — This Week Only

Monday, September 7, 2009

In this week’s online The New Yorker there’s a great Ros Chast cartoon called “Meet Mr. Twitters.”

You’ll find it also at the link above, along with 16 others, and the usual generous selection of free content from the current issue (with some kept behind the firewall to encourage subscriptions).
I can only leave this cartoon posted [...]

Bright Moments in the Future of Publishing

Friday, September 4, 2009
Category: Bright Moments

I’m often accused by friend and foe alike of being inherently a pessimist, and often think that this must color my thinking and hence my writing on this website. I’ll always recall my father, somewhat depressed towards the end of his life, offering me the sage advice: “Son, you’ll often hear people say that things [...]
