If you run a $50 billion company and announce that your sales are up 44% going into the holiday season shouldn’t Wall Street give you a standing ovation? Not if you’re Amazon and your profit margins are, once again, taking a short-term hit for the long-term gain.

Amazon’s Kindle Format 8 Snubs the EPUB 3 Party

Compare these two statements about two different new-and-improved e-book specifications:

  • “KF8 has over 150 new formatting capabilities including support for HTML5 and CSS3.”
  • “HTML5 is the base language of EPUB3… The new baseline for style sheets is CSS2.1 with some CSS3 features added.”

They sure sound similar. The first, published yesterday, describes Amazon’s just announced Kindle Format 8 (KF8). The second, published in August, describes the new EPUB 3 specification, formally released just two weeks ago. (more…)

The Trouble with Amazon

Mastering the Art of e-Book Formatting

Reading the New York Times article about the e-book version of Julia Child’s classic Mastering the Art of French Cooking you’d think that a milestone had been reached in the struggle for high-quality e-books. This 1961 book is one of the classics, and the publisher had a tradition to uphold.

Cookbooks have not been a big hit as e-books and part of the problem is assumed to be their complex formatting. Knopf in fact abandoned its first attempt to create an e-book from Mastering because the “technology was not available” to recreate the book’s “distinctive two-column format.”

The story of the Mastering the Art of French Cooking e-book affords an opportunity to look at the current state of e-book creation and the strengths and limitations of the e-book formats in use today. I call this tale Mastering the Art of e-Book Formatting. (more…)
